"How I found my signature style"

Eva Galambos, Owner of Sydney boutique Parlour X.

“I am eclectic in how I put things together. The best way to describe my style right now is soft matched with strong. I’m loving floaty shirts with tailored pants or pencil skirts.

I like to think I’m a fashion conscious person who combines items in her own way. Everything I own is a highlight piece and my wardrobe is exactly like my shop. I buy for Parlour X as if I was doing so for myself. Right now, I stock Cacharel, Antik Batik, Karen Walker, Issa, Vivienne Westwood. All carry completely different styles and sensibilities, but somehow they go together. Of course some customers would only buy one statement piece, but I enjoy combining a few.

Wearing highlight pieces doesn’t have to be about clashing – it’s how you balance them. For me, there are two types of garments. The first is a simple cut with bold prints or detailing – like a floor length skirt in crochet or a loud floral. Alternatively, it’s a monotone in an interesting shape – like a jacket with a convoluted collar or a bustled skirt.

I don’t own basics and I’m rarely in jeans. I have one pair of Notify denims, but they’re cut more like trousers. I’m not a casual person and even when I do dress this way, it’s actually outfitted. This is a throwback to my early 20’s when I lived in London. I had a corporate boyfriend, all of our friends wore tailored pieces and I adopted that style. Prada was just becoming huge then – so I did the whole black, minimal thing.

I came back to Australia in my mid 20s and it was difficult to keep up my London look. The more immersed I became in Australian fashion and the more I went out, the more inspired I was to try new looks.

I have always been confident in my aptitudes and intellectual ability, but since opening Parlour X, I have become much more self-assured in my way of dressing. I love putting myself together every day. Style should reflect how you’ve evolved as a person”
